Needs Assessment: Field Application

Field Scenario

A parent says they “don’t want to spend too much since kids give up on instruments all the time,” and seems slightly defensive, as if expecting to be pushed toward a bigger purchase.

What You Actually Do

You address the real concern directly — explaining rental or lower-commitment entry options (Lesson 5) — rather than either ignoring the comment and pushing a full-price instrument, or getting defensive about your own recommendation.

Why This Matters

This parent is telling you exactly what they need to hear before they’ll feel comfortable buying anything — missing that signal and continuing a generic pitch talks past the actual objection instead of resolving it.

What a Strong Response Includes

  • Directly addressing the stated concern rather than a generic sales pitch.
  • Offering a genuinely lower-risk option if one exists and fits.
  • Not getting defensive about a customer’s budget caution.
