Field Scenario
An adult student says they “played piano as a kid” and want to resume lessons, but you have no other information about their actual current level.
What You Actually Do
- Treat the first lesson as a genuine assessment, not an assumption based on their stated history
- Observe technical fundamentals and ask about prior repertoire to gauge actual current level
- Ask directly what their goals are for resuming lessons
- Use this information to place them accurately, avoiding both over- and under-placement
