Setting Lesson Rates
Rates should reflect the instructor’s experience, local market conditions, and lesson length — researching what comparable local instructors charge is a reasonable starting point, rather than guessing or underpricing out of uncertainty.
Cancellation and Make-Up Policies
A clear, written cancellation policy (how much notice is required, whether make-up lessons are offered) protects both the instructor’s time and the student’s expectations — having this in writing from the start avoids awkward, ad-hoc negotiations later.
Payment Structure
Many studios use package pricing (a block of lessons paid upfront) rather than per-lesson payment, which improves consistency for both instructor and student and reduces the administrative overhead of collecting payment every single week.
Communicating Policies Clearly Upfront
Policies should be communicated clearly before the first lesson, ideally in writing, so that both the instructor and the student (or the student’s parent) start with the same, unambiguous expectations.
