Three Broad Areas of Competency
MTNA’s framework generally addresses three broad areas: musical knowledge (theory, technique, and repertoire understanding across the teacher’s instrument), pedagogical skill (the actual ability to teach effectively), and professional practice (studio management, ethics, and ongoing development).
Musical Knowledge Is a Foundation, Not the Whole Job
A teacher needs solid technical and theoretical command of their instrument — but this course treats that as a prerequisite the instructor already has, not something taught here. What this course focuses on is turning that existing musical knowledge into effective teaching.
Pedagogical Skill: The Core of This Course
Pedagogical skill covers lesson planning, student assessment, communication, and adapting method to the individual student — this is where most of this course’s content lives, since it is the skill set that separates a good player from a good teacher.
Professional Practice Ties It Together
Professional practice covers studio policies, ethical boundaries, ongoing professional development, and how a teacher conducts their business — covered later in this course, and directly relevant to how instructors will eventually operate through this academy’s marketplace.
