Seams: Designed to Open
String instrument bodies are traditionally glued with hide glue specifically because it can be reversed with gentle heat and moisture — and a seam (the glued joint between plates and ribs) opening slightly is actually a designed safety feature, not a defect: it releases stress (often from humidity change or a knock) that would otherwise cause a crack in the wood itself.
Distinguishing an Open Seam From a Crack
An open seam follows the actual glue joint line and typically closes cleanly with proper re-gluing; a crack runs through the wood itself and is a more serious structural issue — correctly telling these apart (an open seam is a straightforward, expected repair; a crack, especially in a structurally significant area, is not) is a core diagnostic skill.
Re-Gluing an Open Seam
A properly re-glued seam uses hide glue (matching original construction) applied with appropriate clamping pressure, worked carefully to avoid excess glue squeezing into visible or tone-affecting areas — this is genuinely within a general string technician’s scope, unlike more serious crack repair (Lesson 1’s scenario).
When a Crack Needs a Specialist
A crack (as opposed to an open seam) — especially one in a structurally load-bearing area like near the soundpost or bridge feet, or one that appears to be actively spreading — is generally beyond routine shop-technician scope and should be referred to a specialist luthier, echoing the judgment call from Lesson 1.
