What the Bridge Actually Does
The bridge transmits string vibration to the instrument’s top plate, and its exact fit, height, and curvature directly shape tone, playability, and string clearance — an ill-fitting bridge (feet not matching the top plate’s curvature exactly) transmits vibration poorly and can even cause structural stress on the top plate over time.
Fitting the Bridge Feet
Each bridge foot needs to match the top plate’s curvature at that exact location precisely — done by hand, checking fit against light showing through any gap, and carefully removing material from the foot (never the top plate) until full, even contact is achieved. This is a slow, careful process, not something to rush.
String Height and Curvature
The bridge’s top curve and the height of each string above the fingerboard need to match the instrument’s intended playing style and the player’s preference — too low causes string buzz against the fingerboard; too high makes the instrument physically harder to play, especially for a beginner already struggling with basic technique.
Correct Bridge Placement
The bridge sits at a specific location relative to the f-holes (typically aligned with the inner notches) — placement even slightly off this position affects both tone and the instrument’s proper string length/intonation relationship, so confirming correct placement is part of every bridge-related service, not just new bridge fitting.
