How Digital Sound Generation Works, Practically
Modern digital pianos and keyboards generally use sampled or modeled sound engines (recorded or mathematically modeled acoustic instrument sounds triggered and shaped based on key press data) — you don’t need deep audio engineering knowledge, but understanding that “voice” or “patch” selection determines which sampled/modeled sound is active helps you correctly diagnose a customer’s “wrong sound” complaint.
Common Voice/Patch Configuration Issues
A customer accidentally changing the active voice (from “grand piano” to some other instrument sound), adjusting layering/splitting settings (combining or dividing the keyboard into zones with different sounds), or changing transpose/octave settings are all common, easily correctable configuration issues that present as “something is wrong with the sound,” distinct from an actual hardware fault (Lesson 1’s scenario).
Polyphony and Note-Dropping Complaints
Polyphony (the maximum number of simultaneous notes/sounds the instrument can produce at once) has a real limit — a complaint about notes “cutting out” during complex playing (heavy pedal use, layered voices, dense chords) can be a genuine polyphony limit being exceeded, not a defect, and explaining this distinction to a customer prevents an unnecessary “repair” request for normal behavior.
Resetting to Factory Defaults as a Diagnostic Step
When a customer has made multiple unclear configuration changes and can’t recall what, a factory reset (with the customer’s understanding and consent, since it clears custom settings) is often the fastest way to isolate whether a persistent “sound” complaint is configuration-based or a genuine hardware/firmware issue.
