Field Scenario
A customer’s digital piano has a hardware fault, and you notice during inspection that a non-standard, incorrect power adapter (not the original or a correctly specified replacement) has been used, which likely caused the internal damage.
What You Actually Do
You explain honestly that this kind of damage, caused by an incorrect power adapter, typically falls outside standard warranty coverage, walk the customer through why (echoing Lesson 4’s emphasis on correct adapter specification), and give them accurate information about repair cost and options going forward, including guidance on using only correctly specified adapters in the future.
Why This Matters
Giving a customer inaccurate warranty expectations, or avoiding the harder conversation about the actual cause, sets them up for a worse surprise later when a warranty claim is denied — honest, upfront information, even when it’s not what the customer hoped to hear, serves them better.
What a Strong Response Includes
- Correctly identifying the actual cause of the damage.
- Giving honest, accurate warranty expectations rather than false reassurance.
- Providing clear guidance to prevent the same issue in the future.
