Role Overview: Field Application

Field Scenario

A customer says they want “a good beginner instrument” for their ten-year-old without specifying anything else, and seems to expect you to just pick one.

What You Actually Do

You ask a few fast, specific questions before recommending anything — has the child expressed interest in a specific instrument or family, is this for a school band/orchestra program with its own requirements, and what budget range are they comfortable with — rather than defaulting to whichever instrument you personally know best.

Why This Matters

“A good beginner instrument” means something different for a school band clarinet requirement than for a child who saw a drum set and got excited — guessing wrong here means a return, a frustrated kid, or both.

What a Strong Response Includes

  • A few fast, targeted questions before any recommendation.
  • Not defaulting to your own favorite instrument family.
  • Checking whether a school program requirement applies before suggesting anything.
