Field Scenario
A customer brings in a trumpet with a sticking second valve, mentioning they’ve already tried adding more valve oil themselves several times with no improvement.
What You Actually Do
Given that oil alone hasn’t resolved it, you investigate further rather than simply reapplying more oil — checking for a bent casing (possibly from a drop the customer may not have mentioned or noticed) or actual wear, since the customer’s own troubleshooting has already ruled out the simplest, most common cause.
Why This Matters
Repeating the same “add more oil” fix that the customer has already tried without success wastes their time and yours — the fact that a simple fix didn’t work is itself useful diagnostic information pointing toward a more involved cause.
What a Strong Response Includes
- Using the customer’s own prior troubleshooting as diagnostic information.
- Investigating beyond the simplest, already-ruled-out cause.
- Checking for a bent casing or wear rather than repeating an ineffective fix.
