Tuning Slides and Main Slides
Every valved brass instrument has slides (tuning slides on each valve, plus the main tuning slide) that need to move smoothly for intonation adjustment — corrosion, dried-out lubricant, or a dent anywhere along a slide’s travel path can cause it to stick, which then gets misdiagnosed by a frustrated player as a valve problem.
Trombone Slide Specifics
A trombone’s outer and inner slide sections must maintain an extremely precise, consistent gap for smooth movement — even a very minor dent on the inner slide can cause the whole slide to bind at that exact position, and correcting it requires specialized slide-straightening tools, not generic dent removal technique.
Dent Removal Fundamentals
Dent removal uses specialized mandrels and burnishing tools worked from inside the tubing (for accessible sections) or careful external technique for less accessible spots — the goal is restoring both correct airflow (a significant dent measurably affects tone and intonation, not just appearance) and correct slide/valve function if the dent is in a moving-part area.
When a Dent Is Cosmetic Only vs. Functionally Significant
Not every dent needs immediate correction — a minor cosmetic dent away from any moving part or airflow-critical area may reasonably be left as-is if the customer isn’t concerned about appearance, while a dent affecting slide movement or located in a way that measurably disrupts airflow should be addressed. Communicating this distinction to the customer, rather than treating every dent as equally urgent, respects their actual priorities and budget.
