Traditional friction pegs hold tuning through friction fit in a tapered peg hole — a peg that slips (won’t hold tension) or sticks (won’t turn smoothly) usually indicates the peg-to-hole fit has changed, often from humidity fluctuation, and peg compound (a specialized paste, not generic lubricant) is used to correct both problems simultaneously by improving grip while easing rotation.
Fine Tuners: Precision Adjustment
Fine tuners (small screw mechanisms mounted at the tailpiece) allow small, precise pitch adjustments without the larger, harder-to-control adjustment a peg makes — especially important for beginners, who often struggle with the fine motor control pegs require. Standard setup for a beginner instrument typically includes fine tuners on all four strings; more advanced setups sometimes use fine tuners only on the E string, which is more sensitive to large peg adjustments.
Diagnosing a Peg Problem vs. a String Problem
An instrument that won’t hold tuning could be a slipping peg, a fine tuner that has reached the end of its adjustment range, or a string genuinely reaching the end of its usable life (old strings lose tuning stability) — correctly identifying which of these is the actual cause before attempting a fix prevents wasted effort on the wrong component.
Peg Hole Wear and When Reaming/Refitting Is Needed
Repeated peg compound application is a reasonable maintenance step, but a peg hole that has worn oval or significantly enlarged over time may need actual reaming and a new, properly fitted peg — recognizing when maintenance-level correction isn’t enough and real refitting is needed is part of accurate diagnosis here.
