Initial Student Assessment and Placement

Why the First Lesson Is an Assessment

A new student’s first lesson should function as an assessment, not an assumption — observing their current skill level, prior experience, physical technique, and stated goals before deciding where instruction should actually begin.

What to Actually Assess

A useful initial assessment covers technical fundamentals (posture, hand position, basic technique), music reading ability if relevant, prior repertoire experience, and the student’s own stated goals for taking lessons.

Avoiding Both Over- and Under-Placement

Placing a student in material that is too advanced leads to frustration and poor technique habits; placing them too far below their actual level leads to boredom and disengagement — an accurate initial assessment reduces both risks.

Setting Goals Together

Beyond skill assessment, understanding what the student actually wants (casual enjoyment, serious skill development, a specific song or repertoire goal) shapes how instruction should be structured going forward.
